The earthworm species most commonly employed are red wigglers (Eisenia fetida or Eisenia andrei), although European nightcrawlers (Eisenia hortensis, synonym Dendrobaena veneta) and red earthworms (Lumbricus rubellus) may also be utilized. Red wigglers are favored by many vermicomposting specialists due to their excellent appetite and rapid breeding capabilities. European nightcrawlers are known by several other names, including dendrobaenas, dendras, Dutch nightcrawlers, and Belgian nightcrawlers.

Vermicompost, which contains water-soluble nutrients, serves as a nutrient-dense organic fertilizer and soil conditioner that is relatively easy for plants to absorb. Worm castings are occasionally employed as an organic fertilizer. The earthworms grind and uniformly mix minerals into simpler forms, allowing plants to access them with minimal effort. 

The digestive systems of the worms create conditions that enable certain microbial species to flourish, contributing to a “living” soil environment for plants. The portion of soil that has passed through the digestive tract of earthworms is referred to as the drilosphere.

Vermiwash can also be derived from the liquid extract of vermicompost. It has been found that vermiwash contains an enzyme cocktail comprising proteases, amylases, urease, and phosphatase. Microbiological analyses of vermiwash indicate the presence of nitrogen-fixing bacteria such as Azotobacter sp., Agrobacterium sp., and Rhizobium sp., 

along with some phosphate-solubilizing bacteria. Laboratory trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of vermiwash in promoting plant growth.
